Ciao! I have been teaching Italian for the past twelve years. I have taught privately and at language schools like La Scuola Italiana del Greenwich Village in New York and ItalCultura, the school of the Italian Cultural Institute of Chicago. During the first few lessons I will make sure you have the tools to pronounce and identify all the sounds of the Italian language. This step is essential! And it will make everything easier afterwards. When I teach Italian I try to avoid all the things that I hated as a language student. We will use real songs, real literature, do real conversation and storytelling. When you are engaging all your senses it is easier to keep your mind relaxed and to remember new words. I will customize my materials to your interests, needs and desired pace. And because you are learning from a native Italian you will also learn about Italian culture and history. You will absorb a way of thinking, not just grammar rules. I speak a bunch of languages so I know a thing or two about how tedious language classes can be. My terrifying French teacher in middle school made us repeat the same fake dialogue from a really bad book ad nauseam, over and over and over again. Some of those dialogues are carved in my brain: “Bonjour, je m’appelle Richard Drapeau, je viens du Canada, je suis Canadien...” When I teach Italian I try to avoid all the things that I hated as a language student. I hold a degree in Lingue e Letterature Straniere (Foreign Languages and Literatures) from Università Roma Tre (equivalent to an American MA) and a Master’s of Fine Arts in Interdisciplinary Arts and Media from Columbia College Chicago. I wrote a thesis about translating a long epic poem by W. H. Auden and I tried to ride a horse across America.

Do you love Italian people, history, and food and you would like to speak the language? I am a CEDILS-certified Italian teacher born and raised in Florence, and I've also been a language student myself for a long time! If you want to be able to interact with Italians quickly, I can give you some tips about correct pronunciation, fundamental grammar, and vocabulary, but also Italian art and popular culture, which I think is fundamental to understanding the mentality and the country that you are going to interact with. Lessons will be tailored according to the student's needs, level, and mother language and focused on the conversation. I am also available to proofread your writings.

Italian and Indonesian are not widely spoken languages, however, both the Italian and Indonesian community are spread across the world and I have noticed that many are the mixed Italian and Indonesian families living in the Hague! My classes are not special, they are simply meant for children and adults who wish to have someone who they can talk to and improve either Italian or Indonesian. My classes will “offer” you a friend who can stimulate you to speak the language and learn the everyday language without being particularly ambitious. Sometimes what it counts is to understand the everyday language culture and not being afraid to speak. That’s what you to grasp for my classes. Perfection is awesome but confidence and fluency are admirable and appealing!

In our first class, I will discuss with you what you want to focus on (conversation, grammar, vocabulary, etc.) and we will design together the course. I do believe that tailored classes are way more efficient. That's why I would like to talk to you about your needs and what you want to achieve with the classes, in order to make the perfect program and make the best out of the time we have. My goal is to make you improve your language skills while getting passionate about the Italian language. Most important is that each course is based on the needs, interests and availability of the student. - The method is mainly what is called communicative, aimed at stimulating the student to speak immediately and put the focus on the functional aspect of the language. For beginners, I usually follow a specific program, I prepare a course and for each lesson I send students the files that I scan from the various books. As an Italian Opera singer, I help since many years singers with the right pronunciation of the repertoire they sing, helping them in shaping the language in a clear way, which also helps the singing. Our lesson will involve speaking, pronunciation exercises and singing. We will start the lesson by reading the text and finding the right direction and emphasis. We will focus on the sounds and how to produce them. In the second part of the lesson, we will apply all of the above to the singing!

If you've decided to keep reading, it's probably because you're thinking about learning a new language, so the first thing I want to say is: CONGRATULATIONS! :) Learning something new is always a good idea! With that said, let me introduce myself. I have a degree in Linguistic and Cultural Mediation and a degree in International Relations. I have been teaching Italian as a foreign language for many years and in the past I have also been giving some Spanish classes, so I want to assure you that despite your level of Italian, we will not have communication problems and we will be able to use Spanish as an auxiliary language :) Throughout my professional career I have had experiences in different types of classes, both in Italy and Spain. Thanks to them I have learned how important it is to use varied teaching methods since each person learns in their own way. What works for you may not work for another person and that is why I have decided not to adopt a predefined methodology and to adapt my way of teaching to the needs, objectives and interests of the person(s) who participate in my classes. I like to improvise and have a class as entertaining as possible, mixing linguistic elements with cultural themes. This is more or less a summary of who I am and how I see teaching.
