Biochemistry for Undergraduates and Curious Adults

Do you ever wonder why you're not supposed to eat grapefruits whilst taking certain medicines? Are you an undergraduate struggling with a particular topic in your degree (or is there something you're dying to know more about)? Do you have any vaccine-hesitant relatives? Or perhaps you always thought cells were cool but never knew where to start? If so, this might be for you.

Like all my classes, this is student-led: you tell me what particular area you want to learn about, and I'll teach it to you. If you just want to know more about how we function and don't know where to start, don't worry! I'll take you through basic undergraduate topics like Biological Chemistry and Cell Biology, and as your knowledge of the fundamentals grows we'll move on to more advanced topics such as Metabolism, Genomics, Biotechnology, Microbiology and Immunology, and you can direct your own learning journey.

I have a first-class Biochemistry degree from Imperial College with particular strengths/academic interests in Antimicrobial Resistance, Immunology, Biotechnology and Plant Science.

About Me

Hi! I'm Jonah, a passionate Biochemistry graduate from Imperial College who's currently completing an MRes in Drug Design at UCL. My whole life I've loved explaining things to people, so the summer before I started my undergraduate degree I decided to make a job out of it. Since then, I've worked with kids aged 9-13 providing entrance exam preparation, post-COVID catch up and KS3/GCSE help.

As part of this, I've provided support to kids struggling due to Specific Learning Disorders such as Autism, Dyslexia and ADHD. As someone with ADHD myself, I feel a certain kinship with my neurodivergent pupils and provide a sympathy, understanding and personalisation they may sometimes not receive from neurotypical teachers. To be able to make a difference here is a real treat.

Throughout my tutoring career, I have loved nothing more than meeting enthusiastic, curious students and stretching their knowledge and understanding to new levels. Therefore, not only do I provide 11+, GCSE and A-level tuition, but also Biochemistry classes to all ages interested on any related topic they choose - whether an undergraduate eager for further reading about an academic topic (or if you need help understanding some complexity) or if you're just curious about the way we function. So if you want some knowledge to bat down an anti-vaxxer relative (or indeed if you're vaccine-hesitant yourself), if you've always had a morbid fascination with disease or if you want to understand what the point of taking creatine at the gym is, I've got you covered. Let's have some fun!

Education

Secondary Education at St Olave's Grammar School:
- Nine 9s and one 8 (Music) at GCSE
- Three A*s in Biology, Chemistry and Maths A-level
Undergraduate at Imperial College London:
- Biochemistry, First-Class Honours (2024)

Experience / Qualifications

I have 3 years experience as a private tutor providing entrance exam preparation and KS3/GCSE subject help to both neurotypical and neurodiverse students. I have a clear basic DBS check.
Got a topic in biology or chemistry A-level you're unsure about? Perhaps you just want a crash course in everything to make sure you've got no gaps. Or maybe there's an area you're super interested in and want to know more? This class does what it says on the tin. My classes are student-led: I design our lessons around your needs - let me know what you need and I will deliver. I achieved: A* Salters-Nuffield Biology A-level A* OCR Chemistry A (I'm familiar with content of other exam boards) BSc Biochemistry 1st Class (Imperial College London) And I want to help you achieve this too!
Taught by someone who did his entrance exams less than 10 years ago (and remembers them), this class is for children aged 8-10 preparing for their exams to enter selective grammar/independent schools. Whether it's a regional exam for multiple schools (like the 11+) or a particular exam for a particular selective school (like my old school St Olave's), this class will cater to your needs. It will be student-led: you let me know what topics you're struggling with, and in an hour we'll have you secure and smashing those exam questions. This class will cover English (comprehension and creative writing), Mathematics, Non-Verbal and Verbal reasoning with a particular focus on topics from GL and CEM 11+ exam boards. We'll also cover exam technique and mastering exam nerves to help you achieve your full potential - I walked into my 11+ with flu and came out with full marks (and flu); if I can do it, you can too!
