The bass viol can best be described as a cross between a cello and a guitar: the tuning and left hand technique are close to the guitar, but playing position and bowing are reminiscent of the cello. Film buffs know the instrument from the movie 'Tous les Matins du Monde' in which the gamba music of Ste. Colombe and Marin Marais is central. The instrument is also known through the passions of JS Bach, in which it plays a prominent role.
