1st Class Cambridge Graduate – Latin & Ancient Greek Classes

I'm a Cambridge graduate in Classics from Kings' College. I've tutored for the past 7 years specialising in teaching Classics (Latin, Ancient Greek and Classical Civilisation) as well as English for 11+ and 13+ exams. Previous students have gained admission to Eton, Westminster and other leading UK schools. My goal is to ensure students feel happy and confident for any upcoming assessments they might have and to lay the foundations for further development!

Contrary to popular belief, learning Latin is not like learning the phone book by heart. I offer you Latin lessons that are unlike any other. There are two types of courses. Here is an analogy to illustrate their respective approaches: If you take the train back and forth every day and don't have time to wait long at the platform, imagine that you only have two options: 1) Learn the schedules by heart. 2) Note that the train arrives every ten minutes and that a train arrives for example at 7:00 a.m. In school pedagogy, in study notebooks and in ordinary courses, it is the first approach which is adopted - in the courses that I offer you, it is the second because it is more economical and faster. My offer is aimed at both students and adults who want to learn the Latin language or deepen their knowledge without time-consuming detours through the insanities of school methods which do not produce results. Learning is easy but unlearning what has become a bad habit is extremely difficult. All the more important it is to learn the right reflexes as early as possible. With my tailor-made teaching you will accelerate your learning in a positive state of mind. I offer individual or group Latin lessons (2 to 5 people). The methods are based on cognitive sciences and in particular historical linguistics. What will not be the subject of the course: learn lists of verbs; learn lists of nouns with their gender; learn words with their translations; memory card game; doing school exercises; follow the program in a notebook; impose French grammar on the Latin language. What matters to me in particular: motivate my student and give him a learning rhythm; encourage creativity; make friends with language; letters and their sounds strengthen your memory by working on the phonological loop; teach construction plans instead of having people learn sentences by heart; explain how the language works to make my student independent as quickly as possible; breaking preconceived ideas such as the gammatical gender would have a link with the biological gender, the accusative would be a direct complement and the dative an indirect complement, the verbs would be irregular, the declension would be random and therefore to be learned with each verb... ; place practice at the center and articulate grammar around practice. As a recent Oxford Classics graduate, I am keen to share my love of Latin and the Latin language with any would-be enthusiasts. I have experience in tutoring Latin from scratch to A-Level equivalent standard. In these classes, I'll focus on equipping my students with the necessary tools to master grammar as well as to build up their vocabulary repertoire. Learning Greek can help you understand the etymology of many English words and terms, enhancing your vocabulary and comprehension. For example, words like "psychology," "democracy," and "philosophy" all have Greek origins. By learning Greek, you gain the ability to read and understand both classical and modern Greek literature. Classical works by authors like Sophocles, Euripides, and Aristophanes are best appreciated in their original form, capturing nuances and meanings that translations might miss. Additionally, modern Greek literature offers rich storytelling and contemporary insights into Greek culture and society.

In this Latin course, I offer "Common Entrance at 13+" training (including scholarship papers) for those students who have studied Latin for one or two years, and would like to revise, do translations and read from fun books such as Minimus or So you really want to learn Latin. Plenty of cultural stories and mythology in the mix, besides battles and august men. A basic understanding of grammar (or willingness to learn) expected. Ideally, students ought to be doing Latin at school and preferably have a second language (a Romance language ideal for securing a higher grade).

You will learn Latin the way it was meant to be learned - through conversation! Medieval scholars and contemporary language researchers alike advocate the use of dialogues and comprehensible input for language acquisition, and it most certainly works! As opposed to the "memorise grammar rules and then babble them in front of the class" approach that was demonstrated by the infamous "Romanēs eunt domus" scene from Monty Python's "The Life of Brian", you will learn to feel the grammar, so that you will be able to use the different cases of Latin without even thinking about it, just like a native speaker! Traupman Conversational Latin for Oral Proficiency I will be the collocutor and I will answer the learner's questions and explain certain oddities solely in Latin (I will use a second language only when the situation calls for it) We will also engage in free-form conversations, discussions of the dialogues, of our life experiences etc so that the learner can apply what they learn to real-life situations and expand their vocabulary

Salvē, my name is Carlotta and I have 7 years of experience in tutoring. Nowadays these continue online, which in my experience does not reduce the quality or results in any way. Since April 2022, I have been taking Latin language acquisition courses at Schola Latīna, an Italian private school that uses the comprehensible input (CI) method. This means that all lessons are taught exclusively in the target language, allowing me to not only translate Latin, but also speak and write it. Since no Flemish school expects active language skills, I will of course not do this unsolicited during lessons ;) In practice the same problems always return: difficulties with translation, difficulties with memorization of sequences and vocabulary, lack of motivation or fun. When such a fantastic profession is experienced as difficult, it is only logical that motivation also drops. Whatever the problem, Latin itself is a perfectly feasible subject. I also tutored mathematics and noticed that students only have fun when they are no longer struggling, which is what we are working towards :) My goal is to be less needed as quickly as possible by learning and practicing strategies. This class is designed for people to work through translation with a variety of Latin passages of all difficulties. I will provide and prepare the texts, and we will work through them together in order to ensure maximum understanding. Authors include Virgil, Ovid, Catullus, Cicero, Nepos, and others.

Associate professor, Doctor of Letters, translator, teaches ancient Greek. This course is for anyone wishing to learn ancient Greek and gradually gain access to literature, culture, philosophy, and ancient history. The course calls on basic French grammar knowledge, which can be reviewed as needed.
