Music Production using the GarageBand app on an iPad

Garageband is a powerful Digital Audio Workstation that allows musicians and beginner producers to record a whole album if they wish. I'll teach you how to remake a song/piece of your choosing from the ground up. You'll use the inbuilt virtual instruments, your own voice, and your guitar/keyboard to rebuild your chosen track or give it your own unique stamp.

Music production is a huge topic so I'll teach you the essential musical skills such as ear training, understanding rhythm and basic harmony. You'll learn basic recording skills using the iPad mic or an interface and we'll use virtual/real instruments to record the parts. You'll learn how to edit and I'll show you how to create an interesting song structure and how to layer multiple instruments so they don't clash! Finally, we'll look at mixing, effects, and EQ to give your track a professional polish!

Extra information

You must have access to an iPad (at least an air 3) and play at least one instrument to a reasonable standard.

About Me

I feel happiest when I’m teaching anything to do with music or Music Technology. My sister passed her love of music onto me when she played me Trick of the Tail by Genesis when I was 10 years old! I want my legacy to be passing that passion on to other people.

I have a firm belief in focussing on musical fundamentals such as ear training, counting and feeling rhythms and understanding theory rather than just following a method book. It is about fostering a deep love for music and teaching others how to realistically use musicianship in the real world. This could be having the confidence to play and sing at an open mic or to accompany someone on Piano or Guitar.

I particularly want to reach people who understand that it’s about so much more than getting through grades as quickly as possible. I specialise in Rock and Pop and can teach other styles if required. My suggestion for an ideal musical roadmap would be to learn drums, then keyboards then guitar as this would be the easiest and most engaging way to develop musicality.

Education

Barnsley College - 2007

2:1 BA (hons) Degree Creative Music Technology and Sound Recording

ABRSM Grade 5 Music Theory

Dearne Valley College - 2012

PTTLS teaching qualification

Experience / Qualifications

I’m comfortable teaching guitar, keyboards, drums, theory and any aspect of Music Technology. I also offer group classes such as Rock band, iPad music making and music to picture.

I’ve taught privately for years and have experience in Primary schools including being a music peripatetic and a whole class PPA tutor. I was a Music Worker with young people at the YMCA and have taught guitar to adults at HMP Humber. I taught small group guitar online during lockdown then mixed age keyboard groups of 4 for the last 3 years but I also love teaching 1 to 1s.

I’ve tried a few different methods and approaches and have found lots of ways to engage different ages, abilities and needs. I use musical board games, singing, quizzes, youtube and iPad apps and I’m a fan of using gear like my Akai force and looper to make it fun! I love using cool online tools such as Solfeg.io and Piano Adventures.

I use various books including Rockschool and Hal Leonard and can teach up to grade 8. I’ve played all three instruments in various bands and currently host open mics.

Jim
Electronic Music Production (Ableton Live, Synthesis, Mixing, mastering, Sound Design, Composition, Live Performance, DJ, Coaching)
I am an electronic music producer with a Master’s degree in Music from the renowned Rockacademie in Tilburg, Netherlands, and I have a music studio in the heart of Amsterdam. Working under the name Malvae, I write, sing, produce, mix, master, and perform my own music, enabling me to provide the entire process under one roof. My journey has led me to the Spotify Viral 50 charts in the USA on nr.17, features in films like the upcoming documentary 'King of the Streets', directed by an award-winning filmmaker, and even a Netflix series. With over 7 million streams to date, I am now excited to share my knowledge and experience with a few dedicated students. Earlier this year, I had the honour of headlining my own show at the Melkweg in Amsterdam, showcasing a self-built live set accompanied by immersive visuals. I also had the pleasure of teaching at Wisseloord Studios in Hilversum. In addition to my artistry, I work as an audio engineer for radio, podcast series, create custom music for film, and offer mixing and mastering services for various clients. I also have experience working on promotion plans and collaborating with PR agencies, which has helped me successfully build my own fanbase of over 10,000 Spotify followers through targeted advertising on Meta. I truly believe that everyone has the potential to discover their distinct sound if they are willing to put in the work. Whether you are just starting your musical journey or looking to dive deeper into the creative process, I invite you to book a lesson with me. Together, we can explore where you currently stand and how I can help you take your music to the next level. I can show you how to work with analog gear, as I have a collection of synthesizers, including the Prophet 6, Moog DFAM, Minitaur, and Ableton Push 3. If you're interested in performing live, we can even translate your music into a live set using Ableton Live and work with Resolume to bring your sound to life visually, creating an engaging experience for your audience. My music often incorporates samples I record from my travels around the world which I manipulate and blend with synthesizers and my voice. I found my sound this way, and I want to guide you on your journey to discovering yours. Don’t worry; we won’t have to go to the ends of the earth to find it. I’ll show you the tools to recreate or transform any sounds you already have, helping your productions stand out. Of course, we can also simply talk about your music or receive feedback, whatever you feel is best for you. My expertise includes, but is not limited to, Ableton Live, mixing, mastering, composition, sound design, industry insights, live performance, synthesis, music theory, and audio engineering. While I primarily work in Ableton Live, my knowledge is applicable to any program you use. Lessons will be tailored to your individual needs, and I offer sessions both online and in-person at my studio. I believe in providing a consistent and supportive experience, no matter the format. For online lessons, I use a program that allows me to listen to your music or projects in HD quality through a plugin you load onto your master channel, ensuring we can collaborate effectively in real time. I look forward to the opportunity to work with you and help you grow as an artist!

Music Production Masterclass: How To Be A Bedroom Producer
Bedroom producers form the bedrock that most of the electronic genres comprising today's musical landscape are built off of. With a desktop PC, laptop, tablet or phone and an internet connection, you have near-instant access to all the tools necessary to create sounds literally never heard before in human history. Never has it been easier for an aspiring artist to begin, master and hone their craft, be it a hobbyist looking for a cathartic outlet or a chart-topping, platinum-record-stacking industry giant. The issue is; making music's tough. And Digital Audio Workstations are scary. And writer's block is terrible. And music theory makes my teeth itch. With both a masters and bachelors degree in music technology, years of professional musical experience spanning a wide array of genres and applications and eyebrows that'll knock your socks off, I can walk you through everything you need to become an electronic music producer. I can show you advanced tips and tricks to make the most out of your DAW of choice, I can help you with grasping the musical theory necessary to take the stress out of composition, I can teach you how to eradicate the dread of writer's block, discover your own musical voice, and help you become one of the great composers of our modern era. The Beethoven's, the Mozart's, the Tchaikovsky's. Just a little more sleep-deprived, I imagine. Or I can just help you throw a beat together, whatever suits you. (As a seasoned mental health battler; I am available midday to midnight GMT for you night owls, and will happily cater to those uncomfortable with face-to-face online sessions. Neither a webcam nor a microphone is necessary, we can pretend it's a Twitch chat if you need. Don't stress yourself out of wanting to learn. Just be prepared for me to monologue about resampling until you interrupt me with an emote.)
