Portuguese is part of the family of Latin languages, including Ibero-Romance languages, such as Spanish (or "Castilian"), Catalan and Galician. His accent is closer to Catalan and Galician (which shares the same roots) and the pronunciation of certain words has some peculiarities: the letter ç (with the cedilla) is used before the "a", the "o" and the "u" (as in French); the circumflex accent is used on the vowels for the pronunciation of the closed vowels ("â" as Câmara, "ê" as pêssego - and as "summer" - and "ô" as avô - and as "eau"); the acute accent (') is used for the pronunciation of open vowels (the grave accent is rarely used), such as' á' (água), 'é' (p- or 'head') and 'ó' ( as mó); the tilde (~) is used on the letters ã (as mãe or pão) and õ (as põe) to indicate a nasal pronunciation of these vowels; Portuguese uses many oral diphthongs, such as "ai" (pai), "ei" (as lei), "oi" (as boi), "ui" (as Rui), and "iu" (as viu); the letter "s" is pronounced like "ch" at the end of the words (as francés or pessoas) or before a consonant (as estar or esperança). When the letter "s" is at the beginning of the words (like sapo) or in case of double consonant (like passado), it is pronounced like the French word "sac". If the letter "s" is between two vowels (like casa) it is pronounced like the letter "z" (like "zero"). Portuguese has two official standards: the Portuguese standard and the Brazilian standard (no, the "Brazilian" does not exist!). Each official standard has differences in emphasis (more open in Brazil than in Portugal), vocabulary and some syntactic structures. In addition to these two official standards, Portuguese also has a great variety of accents and a great wealth of vocabulary, especially in Portuguese-speaking African countries, as well as in Asia or Oceania.

Communicative Methodology The lessons are based on everyday situations that are relevant to the student's sociocultural reality. The main focus is to learn the language in the context in which it is actually used, presenting situations such as at a restaurant, at home, or talking on the phone. In addition, it emphasizes communication between students in these situations, allowing them to exchange experiences. For example, to work on past tense verbs, we can talk about what you did over the weekend. This way, the student applies the new language to their everyday situations. Reading and writing related to these everyday situations are also worked on, encouraging reflection and helping to solidify the content. The method works for both beginner and advanced students. The lessons are naturally developed around practical topics, always focused on real-life subjects (based on the student’s reality). Since we will be learning English or Portuguese through practical contexts, we won't waste time teaching grammar traditionally, which makes the lessons more dynamic and interactive.

The wonderful Portuguese adventure! Advantages of learning a new language: Learning a new language is fun. But what I’m (and you should be) after is not bilingualism but instead biculturalism. We think by aid of words. Therefore language shapes thought. In part this is because working in a second language slows down the thinking. No wonder people feel different when speaking a second language. And no wonder they feel looser, more spontaneous, perhaps more assertive or funnier or blunter. Studies show that being able to speak another language is generally linked to a more flexible brain, developing the brain’s ability to plan and prioritize. Also it betters our defenses against dementia in old age. Advantages of learning Portuguese: • 250 million native speakers worldwide • 5th most common language in the world • It has been an official language since 1297 • It’s usage is spread over 4 continents (Europe, South America, Africa, Asia) Now business, The pace, duration, frequency and schedule of the classes is totally up to the student to decide. The best case scenario is 1-2x per week depending on both parties availability. Focus on diverse subjects is possible, for example, grammar, diction, reading comprehension, written production, conversational skills. In case the student has no specific requests, together we will follow the guidelines of a trusted book (that I myself bring to the class and the student doesn’t need to acquire). In every class the student will be directly influenced by worldwide Portuguese culture ( music, history, geography). Periodically we will evaluate how the classes are evolving so as to rapidly and effectively shift focus to where it is needed.
