In the IGCSE and CIE (AS/A Level) Biology and Chemistry curricula, Organic Chemistry is a major topic, particularly within Chemistry. Here's a breakdown of what is covered at each level: --- IGCSE Chemistry (Cambridge - 0620/0971) In IGCSE, Organic Chemistry focuses on the fundamentals of carbon compounds and their reactions. Key areas include: 1. Introduction to Organic Chemistry - Definition: Organic chemistry is the study of carbon-based compounds. - Hydrocarbons: Compounds made up of carbon and hydrogen only. 2. Types of Hydrocarbons - Alkanes: - General formula: CnH2n+2 - Properties: Saturated hydrocarbons (single bonds). - Combustion and substitution reactions. - Alkenes: - General formula: CnH2n - Properties: Unsaturated hydrocarbons (double bonds). - Addition reactions (e.g., with bromine water as a test for alkenes). 3. Functional Groups and Homologous Series - Alcohols: General formula CnH2n+1OH (e.g., ethanol). - Properties and combustion. - Carboxylic Acids: General formula CnH2n+1COOH(e.g., ethanoic acid). - Weak acids, their reactions, and uses. 4. Polymers - Addition Polymerization: Formation of polymers from alkenes (e.g., poly(ethene), poly(propene)). - Natural and Synthetic Polymers: Proteins, nylon, and plastics. - Environmental Issues: Problems with non-biodegradable plastics. --- CIE AS and A Level Chemistry (9701) At the AS/A Level, Organic Chemistry is studied in greater depth, with emphasis on structure, reactions, and mechanisms. Key topics include: 1. Structure and Bonding in Organic Compounds - Structural, displayed, and skeletal formulas. - somerism: - Structural isomers. - Stereoisomerism: cis-trans(E/Z) isomerism. 2. Functional Groups and Reactions - Alkanes: Combustion and free radical substitution reactions. - Alkenes: Addition reactions (e.g., hydrogenation, halogenation, hydration). - Alcohols: Preparation (hydration of ethene) and oxidation (to aldehydes, ketones, or carboxylic acids). - Halogenoalkanes: Nucleophilic substitution reactions. - Carboxylic Acids: Reactions (e.g., neutralization, esterification). - Esters: Formation and hydrolysis. 3. Mechanisms of Reactions - Free radical substitution (e.g., in alkanes). - Electrophilic addition (e.g., in alkenes). - Nucleophilic substitution (e.g., in halogenoalkanes). 4. Polymers and Biochemistry - Addition and condensation polymers. - Structure of proteins and DNA. 5. Organic Synthesis - Pathways for converting one functional group to another. - Use of reagents, conditions, and mechanisms in synthesis. Summary - IGCSE Organic Chemistry focuses on basic hydrocarbons (alkanes, alkenes), functional groups (alcohols, carboxylic acids), and polymers. - AS/A Level Organic Chemistry goes deeper into mechanisms, isomerism, synthesis pathways, and advanced functional groups.

Trusted teacher: Dear parents, dear students I welcome you. You are looking for a CHEMISTRY teacher, and I hope you find one who can meet your expectations. Maybe I would be the right person for you? To help you choose, here is my profile and what I can bring you through my lessons and my way of supporting students. My name is Minh, researcher at CNRS Gif-sur-Yvette. My daily life consists of using organic chemistry to make new "stuff". My “stuff” are molecules that I build from atoms. And my dream is that one day I will produce a molecule that can kill the damn cancer. When I'm not making molecules, I like to teach others how to make them. This is why I was a teacher at the University of Paris Sud. At the university, I was in charge of tutorials and practical work in organic chemistry. During those two years, I realized that when you give a class in an amphitheater of 400 students, the biggest challenge was to reach every student in the class. It was an impossible mission because each student has their own pace. For some my teaching was too fast and too complex, for others it was too slow and did not challenge them enough. So I decided to quit academia and become a part-time private professor of organic chemistry. *** Now let me convince you why you should hire me as an organic chemistry tutor;) First of all, because I am mainly specialized in intensive preparation in general chemistry and organic chemistry for the most demanding competitions and exams: - health studies (EU 1, new PACES / PASS reform) - grandes écoles (Polytechnic / ENS preparation) - Agro / Véto (BCPST and B ENV) - Scientific secondary school diploma In parallel, I help to boost the academic record of BTS, IUT, license (L1, L2, L3) / master (M1, M2) of chemistry for bridges. But the most important thing is that I don't just pass on knowledge or instill a working method. I am committed to creating a climate of trust that will encourage you to give the best of yourself. I support you in your progress and adapt the work carried out in progress by taking into account your strengths as your weak points. I encourage you with each progress made and prevent you from giving up in case of underperformance. I vary the exercises and the pace of the sessions, in order to avoid the routine to settle down. For all these reasons, my private lessons are unlike any other. They are unique. Like each of my students :). *** Important Info: The services give the right to a tax advantage without conditions of resources: The amounts paid during one year are thus reimbursed up to 50% the following year. This is possible since my activity, carried out under the micro-enterprise regime, has been declared to DIRRECTE. I also offer courses by videoconference / webcam with suitable equipment, the goal is to recreate a working atmosphere as if we were side by side and to make the course even more efficient thanks to an appropriate camera. Unlike most other tutors, I do not charge extra for additional students. If you want to study together with one or two friends, you can! Group classes provide a very valuable opportunity for discussion and brainstorming. However, working in a group also means that you will have less individual attention than you would normally get in an individual lesson. I accept employment-service checks (CESU) which allows you to benefit from a tax reduction of around 50% on the hour of class.

Basics of Scientific Research for Bachelor's, Master's and Doctoral Students (Sciences - Pharmacy)
Mahmoud
In my first class, I observed that Dr. Mahmoud was very enthusiastic and professional, and was able to deeply understand students' ideas and propose specific solutions. He demonstrates a high degree of expertise in science, pharmaceutical research and academic journal writing. Manage time properly during tutoring. For students who have difficulties with their homework, he can immediately provide clear study plans and guidance, and make suggestions for preparation before the next class. I highly recommend this experienced professional Dr. Mahmoud who loves teaching. He will be of great help to students who need tutoring in the future.

André
The best teacher I have ever had! He really works with every student the way it works best for them, instead of best for him. We've worked on biochem for 3-ish months and I've hated the subject and couldn't bring myself to even open the book and with him I passed my exam with a 85%. Can only recommend!!

David
The course was very nice! David is a very good teacher. He is very patient and attentive. He prepares materials for the class and makes sure the student is able to follow up his explanations. He is also a very lively person with whom one can have a very nice conversation. 100% recommended.
