I start by (if available) using your old tests to determine together with you (and possibly your parents) what specific difficulties you have. In addition, we will have a short conversation in which you can explain to me which issues you have experienced as the most difficult and would like to focus more on. My focus is on ensuring that the student is able to find the solution independently, step by step, and I help where necessary by providing mini-tips to get to the next step together. When I notice that a student has difficulty independently coming up with the correct editing steps, I create a concise step-by-step plan tailored to that specific subject so that the student begins to see more structure in the learning material.
