Toby - Berlin, Germany36€
Trusted teacher: Professional viola and violin based in Berlin, teaching in person at students' location or online, in English, German or Russian. As well as instrumental teaching and ensemble coaching of at all levels over the last 12 years, I’ve led numerous professional workshops, including ‘Music First’ and ‘Music Masters’ workshops in London and was an assistant on the Primary Arpeggione viola course and at the Springgrove music competition. As a member of the European String Teachers’ Association, I participated in their conferences across Europe. I have prepared students for music exams at all levels, working with them on music theory, aural and sight reading skills, and regularly accompany students on the piano. As a performing musician, I appear as a soloist and chamber musician internationally, recently including at the ‘Gstaad Menuhin’, ‘Schiermonnikoog’ and 'Rome Chamber Music' festivals. I have participated in several international competitions, notably receiving the Barbirolli prize at the Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition 2019, 1st prize at the Małopolska competition, and the Len Lickorish Memorial Prize at the Royal Overseas League International Strings Competition. I hold a masters degree with first class honours from the class of Tabea Zimmermann at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin, and Bachelors with the same distinction from the Royal Academy of Music in London. I attended the International Musicians Seminar at Prussia Cove on four occasions and have collaborated with composers Garth Knox, Vasilis Alevizos and Thomas Jones on their new works, with performances in London and at the Agora Music Festival in Luxembourg. As a chamber musician I have played with the 12, Seida and 4|12 ensembles, as well as with musicians of the Berlin Philharmonic and clarinettist Matthew Hunt at HellensMusic festival, with Tabea Zimmermann at the Laeiszhalle Hamburg, with Claudio Martínez Mehner and Christoph Poppen in Santander, and with members of the ARC ensemble at the Music of Exile Festival in Toronto, Canada, amongst others. I was a member of the European Union Youth Orchestra in 2018, and a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain from 2014-2015, appearing on BBC Radio 3 broadcasts and a televised BBC Prom, as well as being involved in the NYO outreach programme ‘inspire’ in schools across London, including workshops and interactive performances at the Royal Festival Hall. ** Reviews Below **

Trusted teacher: Approach to Teaching – I favour a structured approach. I devise lesson plans in advance of every lesson, catered to the student's specific needs. – Violin lessons tend to be carefully planned to focus on specific technical aspects of performance. To train musicality, I often teach this through the use of Kreutzer and Fiorillo etudes, Dont studies, and also pieces of repertoire catered to the student's musical interests and technical requirements. – I am open to considering student repertoire suggestions if they are particularly passionate about a certain piece. Lesson Structure – Typically violin lessons range in length from 30 minutes to an hour, but I am flexible: I am more than happy to devise a lesson structure that caters for a student's requirements. Credentials – I am a Musicology PhD candidate at the University of Cambridge. – I have worked as a private violin teacher for 7 years (since I was 17). I have taught a variety of students, from beginners starting their instrumental training, to more advanced performers looking to improve their technical facility and performance skills. – I have performed at West Road Concert Hall (University of Cambridge), The Lee Tseng Hall (Wolfson College Cambridge), Buxton International Festival, Manchester International Festival, and The Bridgewater Hall. – I have an extensive portfolio of performing credits on documentary films; recent highlights include the docuseries on Ghislaine Maxwell and Jeffrey Epstein 'House of Maxwell' (BBC2, 2022), and 'Sir Alex Ferguson: Never Give In' (Netflix) (Passion Pictures / Universal Pictures) (2021). Performance Credits: Soundtrack: House of Maxwell (BBC2) (2022) *Score nominated for BAFTA award Sir Alex Ferguson: Never Give In (Netflix) (Passion Pictures / Universal Pictures) (2021) The Schnoz (Premiered at the Jewish Film Festival 2020) The Chillenden Murders (BBC2) (2017) The Five Wives & Lives Of Melvyn Pfferberg (2016) Conviction: Murder At the Station (BBC2) (2016) Charlie Hebdo: 3 Days That Shook Paris (Channel 4) (2015) Being AP (BBC + Toronto Film Festival) (2015) The Battle for Marjah (HBO) (2012) Popular Music Releases: Grasscut – Human Estuary / The Garden / Witley Common (2021) (Lo Recordings) Grasscut – Coprolite Tip / Courage Traveller / Edges Of Night (2021) (Lo Recordings) Grasscut – September's Night Sky (2015) (Lo Recordings) Grasscut – Beacon (2014) (Lo Recordings) Grasscut – Pieces (2012) (Ninja Tune) Essa Weira – Glimpse (2020) Jaga Jazzist – Toccata (Grasscut remix) (2010) (Ninja Tune xx Vol. 2) (Ninja Tune) – I hold an MPhil(Cantab) in Music from the University of Cambridge, where I specialised in Historical Musicology and Aesthetics. – I led the University of Cambridge Experimental Music Ensemble (CUEME) during my MPhil year – I have a first-class music degree (74.4%) from the University of Manchester, where I won three Hargreaves Prizes for Academic Achievement. – I achieved a distinction (92%) in my ATCL Diploma in violin performance, and a First (78%) in my final violin recital for my undergraduate degree. – I have worked as an Assistant Music Teacher, which involved teaching to A-Level Music students. Ana - Belgrade, Serbia68€
Trusted teacher: Hello, I'm Ana and I'm a graduated violist, a permanent member of Symphony orchestra "Stanislav Binicki" in Belgrade, Serbia. Before passing the audition in an orchestra in January of 2017, I was a professor of viola and violin in a special boarding school for musically gifted children "Skola za muzicke talente Cuprija", for five years. The school is founded and lead by the "Academy of music arts" in Belgrade. There are three schools in the world of that kind: in London, Moscow, and Serbia. My students got 25 1st and few 2nd awards in the republic and international competitions, and all of them signed in to desired academies in Germany, Canada and Serbia as first on the list and with full scholarships. We still keep in touch :) I was a member of the Royal chamber orchestra St. George for four years and took part in many world tours. I played also in National Radio and Television Orchestra in Serbia, Orchestra of National theater of Serbia, National Symphony orchestra of Montenegro and National Symphony orchestra in Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina. I was a member of orchestras which took part in projects "Bridges for the future" in Bern, Switzerland, “Festival Junger Kunstler”, Bayreuth, Germany, “Deutsch-Skandinavischen Jungend-Philharmonie” in Berlin, “Music days international festival” in Russe, Bulgaria, etc. I am currently a Ph.D. student in the 3rd year of studies in Management for culture and media, on the Faculty of Dramatic Arts, Belgrade. I tend to explain to students as simple and as effective as possible. My students enjoy classes, love to play and ask many questions :) I insist on good technique and posture because even if it takes a little bit more time in the beginning, it makes future progress easy and fast.

Fermin
I studied the violin for about 2 months with Fermin and I have grown much in my knowledge of not just how to play but how to think when playing. Fermin has also helped a lot with technical struggles allowing me to break through some of the challenges that were bothering me for a long time. He is a very patient teacher but he will not hesitate to stop you and correct you (as any good teacher would) if you are not playing correctly. I personally requested that he gives me honest feedback which really helped me play better tecnically and musically. I believe he will be open to adapting his strictness upon specific requests. The time difference (Fermin being in Spain and I being in the US) has not been easy but Fermin was very willing to bend his schedule and provided several time slots to accommodate my availability. To sum up, if you are looking for a teacher that is patient in character yet unrelenting toward the goal of fully tapping your potential both musically and tecnically, I would recommend you take a lesson with Fermin.

Toby
Toby is an outstanding instructor and works with children very naturally. My 11 year old son has been taking lessons with Toby for over two months and is eager for each lesson. Toby is extremely talented, but beyond that, he engages my son deeply with the music itself, fundamental techniques, music theory, and even the interpretation of the music. Toby is kind, encouraging, and works with students at a level that is appropriate. He has allowed my son to chose music that if fun and interesting to practice, even though the pieces are challenging. We are located many time zones away from Toby, and the virtual lessons do not hinder our experience with him. In fact, I often sit in to listen to the lessons, as they are so good. My son has had a couple of lessons with Toby while company has been over, and everyone has commented on how amazing Toby is as an instructor. I can not recommend Toby enough and hope to continue lessons with him for a long time.

Daniel
My first lesson with Daniel was just what I wanted and more. Daniel made me feel very comfortable and let me play some music I had been working on. Then Daniel looked at all aspects of my playing in a thorough manner and signposted plans for future lessons. I was really wanting my technique to be reviewed thoroughly and Daniel did exactly this, in a very supportive and encouraging manner. It was incredible to hear the change to my playing Daniel helped me make within the hour. Looking forward to the next lesson! Many thanks!
