Biology for biotechnological applications in various fields

Biotechnology is a broad field that applies biological systems, living organisms, or parts of organisms to develop or create products and services. It's essentially the use of technology to solve problems and make useful products based on biology.
Examples of Biotechnology Applications:
Genetic engineering: Modifying the genetic makeup of organisms to create new traits or improve existing ones.
Bioinformatics: Using computer technology to analyze biological data, such as DNA sequences.
Synthetic biology: Designing and constructing biological systems that don't exist in nature.
Biopharmaceuticals: Producing therapeutic proteins and other drugs from biological sources

Would you like to know more about a specific area of biotechnology, or perhaps we will discuss a particular application in this session.

Molecular Pathways to Life:The Chemistry and Biology of Living Systems
Life is a complex phenomenon and its emergence has been my major curiosity since childhood. I thought I could understand the concepts of the emergence of life by studying molecular biology. Therefore, I did my bachelor's studies in molecular biology and genetics at Yildiz Technical University. My bachelor's education has provided me with a comprehensive understanding and specific skills related to molecular biology. I am pursuing a Master’s degree in Chemistry & Life Sciences at Chimie Paris - Tech/Université PSL to understand the chemistry behind the transition of non–living matter to living matter and improve my perspective on the chemistry of life. I am confident that I can bring some fresh perspectives to complex problems of these topics with my background and skills and can teach fundamentals of these fields.

Orthopedic Biomechanics: Musculoskeletal system and Biomedical Implant Design
I hold a PhD and my thesis topic was the Design of Biomedical Implants and Biomaterials under Static, Impact, and Fatigue loads. I currently work as a post-doctoral researcher in the Aerospace Engineering Faculty at TU Delft (Delft University of Technology). Some examples of the topics that will be covered in our lesson are • The musculoskeletal system • Loads and motion in the musculoskeletal systems • Bone tissue mechanics • Soft tissue mechanics • Beam theory for structural analysis of musculoskeletal systems • Beams on elastic foundation • Interface modelling • Bone-implant systems • Implant design by means of material optimization • Screws in implant fixation • Intramedullary rods • Bone plates • External fixators • Fracture fixation devices • Total hip replacement • Total knee replacement • Articulating surfaces Courses that require knowledge in physiology, Materials Science, and Mechanical Behavior of Materials may become challenging for students who lack a solid basis in either of the fields. To address this, I take a student-centered approach, starting from the basics to actively engage all students, including those with weaker backgrounds. If you have any additional questions before starting a class, please feel free to ask me. I am here to assist! :)

Bioprocessing/Biochemical Engineering/Pharmaceutical Biotechnology (Design, Operation and Scaling of Bioreactors and Unit Operations)
In bioprocessing you cannot have the cake and eat it too. Constantly, you need to make choices about which unit operation is best suited for a particular application and what are the trade offs. Because of so many factors that guide this decision, it can be daunting for starting biotech/bioprocess students to be overwhelmed. I was definitely overwhelmed in my 1st year of uni. But after 5 years studying the subject, I am here to help you to think like an engineer and make informed choices based on the context of the process and product. In my class, I will teach you the theoretical background behind bioreactors and common unit operations (e.g. filtration, centrifugation, chromatography) and how to implement them into a bioprocess. This class is best suited for university students (bachelor or master), people joining/switching industry or just people interested in how pharmaceuticals are made! If you are a university student, we can can discuss your own assignments or projects. My tutoring style is discussion-based. We will have a conversation about the subjects rather than a lecture, which will give you the tools and confidence to better synthesize the course content and present your ideas in a specific manner. I create my own materials for each class, including definitions, calculations, diagrams and past-exam questions. I use a touchscreen tablet to interactively annotate our class worksheets, draw P&IDs, structures and mechanisms, write down chemical reactions and step-by-step calculations. For any questions, please feel free to contact me!

Basic / Advanced Biology using exciting, easy to understand graphical methods
I have a passion for science, especially life science. After having finished my master's degree in Biotechnology and working as a molecular oncology researcher for 3 years, I now wish to share my passion for this field with budding, curious minds. In this class, based on the requirement of the student, I will focus on basic or advanced life science topics such as molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry and bioanalytical techniques. If you are in school and need your basics covered, I can teach basic biology and chemistry in the simplest manner. I can understand these subjects can come off as quite dry to many students, but hopefully, my extreme enthusiasm in this field will change that for you. Hope to see you soon.

Tutoring Biology for senior VWO and HAVO, by a molecular biologist
I graduated as a molecular biologist 20 years ago. Since then I have been making films in which I simplify complex biological concepts. I'm a big fan of biology and I think it would be fun to help you get a better grip on the matter. I can help you briefly with specific topics, or help you for a longer period of time to help you succeed, for example.

Biology for upper HAVO/VWO (also exam preparation)
As a graduated Bachelor student of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Groningen, I am very interested in biology, especially the biology of humans. By learning to better understand the backgrounds of at first sight complex (exam) subjects such as self-regulation, reproduction, and evolution, you ensure that you develop into a person who can adequately answer questions about such subjects. These tutorials will mainly focus on discussing the difficult topics in biology together, clarifying ambiguities about these topics, and creating practice questions. In this way we ensure that you arrive well prepared for every biology test or exam!
