Teaching International Humanitarian Law at 2 Levels; Intermediate - Advanced

With over one year experience in teaching and a decade long experience with adolescents and young adults, I, herein, present my course in "International Humanitarian Law".

In today's globalized world where the effects and repercussions of a conflict are not confined within a single state, it becomes crucial to know what rules are in place that regulate conflict and provide protection to those who are vulnerable. Aiming to mitigate and prevent human suffering in an armed conflict, International Humanitarian Law gives us answers to questions, such as: who can and cannot be targeted and under which conditions; at what times does a protected person lose protection; who is a combatant; what distinguishes a combatant from a civilian; and, what protections are available to those who do not take part in an armed conflict.

Amidst the many interstate conflicts, such as, Ukraine-Russia, Iran-Israel and Palestine-Israel conflicts, as well as the intrastate ones, such as in Sudan, having a working knowledge of International Humanitarian Law becomes even more vital as it re-establishes one's trust in law and humanity at such uncertain times as these ones.

About Me

I am an Afghan who has been brought up in Pakistan. The decades of conflict in my country compelled my parents to leave their hometown and seek refuge in Pakistan. Owing to that, I have done my schooling from Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan. I attained an "A" in the Board Exams of Pakistan, which is a national level examination held all over Pakistan. Subsequently, I obtained my A-Levels in Economics, Law and Sociology from a college in Islamabad. Upon my return to Afghanistan, I pursued my bachelors program in Political Science and Public Administration with a minor in Law at the American University of Afghanistan (AUAF). During my BA, I did not only adhere to academic endeavors but also engaged in certain research projects, extra-curricular and voluntary activities. One of my most essential research projects was drafting the very first "Anti-discrimination Bill" for Afghanistan. I worked in a team of five very talented, determined and dedicated individuals who envisioned getting the bill passed into a law. With the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan in August, 2021, all our dreams were dismantled with no scope of continuing the project. Nevertheless, working on the bill gave me a life-time experience of research, writing, editing, reading, and communication.

With the world grappling with COVID-19, online education became a norm and there were so many opportunities through which one could pursue one's education. Having said that, I, under the Taliban rule, started my micro-masters program and successfully obtained a degree in International Law. The program consisted of five subjects, namely, International Law, International Humanitarian Law, International Human Rights Law, Asylum and Refugee Law, and International Investment Law. All these subjects further enhanced my critical thinking and research skills.

Right after completing my micro-masters, I was offered the position of Teaching Assistant at AUAF, wherein, I was part of the Transition to Success (TTS) program that helped Afghan female students obtain online education - owing to the Taliban ban on female education in Afghanistan - and be able to apply for scholarships abroad. It was an aspiring job that motivated me to broaden my horizons and reach out to as many students as possible.

This was pretty much me:)

English is one of the most widely used languages in today's world; over 67 countries recognize English as one of their official languages. Be it in a school, office or a travel destination, one needs to know English in order to communicate and excel in one's endeavors. However, many non-native speakers find it difficult to speak English, comprehend an English speaker's conversation or converse with an English speaker. Underlying this difficulty is the problem of being unable to direct one's energy and time in the right direction in terms of learning English. As difficult as it might seem and sound, English is a very easy language which can be learnt by anyone provided that s/he is given the right starting point. In this English course, my aim is to make English language learning a memorable and fun experience. Through cardboards, pictures, and visual presentation, I aim to teach English in a way that resonates with every individual's daily activities as it is through these small but significant steps that one can fully establish a good base in English learning and succeed in mastering English. The class will mainly focus on vocabulary building, sentence structure , punctuation, and grammar. Most learning will be done through games and cardboards so as to make English language learning a fun yet fruitful experience.
