GCSE: Latin Language and Latin Literature Lessons.

Contrary to popular belief, learning Latin is not like learning the phone book by heart. I offer you Latin lessons that are unlike any other. There are two types of courses. Here is an analogy to illustrate their respective approaches: If you take the train back and forth every day and don't have time to wait long at the platform, imagine that you only have two options: 1) Learn the schedules by heart. 2) Note that the train arrives every ten minutes and that a train arrives for example at 7:00 a.m. In school pedagogy, in study notebooks and in ordinary courses, it is the first approach which is adopted - in the courses that I offer you, it is the second because it is more economical and faster. My offer is aimed at both students and adults who want to learn the Latin language or deepen their knowledge without time-consuming detours through the insanities of school methods which do not produce results. Learning is easy but unlearning what has become a bad habit is extremely difficult. All the more important it is to learn the right reflexes as early as possible. With my tailor-made teaching you will accelerate your learning in a positive state of mind. I offer individual or group Latin lessons (2 to 5 people). The methods are based on cognitive sciences and in particular historical linguistics. What will not be the subject of the course: learn lists of verbs; learn lists of nouns with their gender; learn words with their translations; memory card game; doing school exercises; follow the program in a notebook; impose French grammar on the Latin language. What matters to me in particular: motivate my student and give him a learning rhythm; encourage creativity; make friends with language; letters and their sounds strengthen your memory by working on the phonological loop; teach construction plans instead of having people learn sentences by heart; explain how the language works to make my student independent as quickly as possible; breaking preconceived ideas such as the gammatical gender would have a link with the biological gender, the accusative would be a direct complement and the dative an indirect complement, the verbs would be irregular, the declension would be random and therefore to be learned with each verb... ; place practice at the center and articulate grammar around practice. Of course, this course is tailored to you, so we can cover any era or author that interests you alongside any preparations for examination. The course can span all the way from the Medieval to Today in terms of content, and provide a grounding in whichever literature you as a student could need. Applications for Classics at Oxford and Cambridge both involve a language assessment, for which I provide expert tutoring and guidance in as a first-class Classics and English graduate from Oxford. Classics at Oxford uses the Classics Admissions Test (CAT) for Course I (for students with Latin/Greek to A Level) or the Classical Language Aptitude Test (CLAT) for Course II (for students without Latin/Greek) to decide who will be invited for interview. At Cambridge only candidates shortlisted for interview will be required to take such assessment, which will be a translation exercise for the 3-year course, or a language aptitude interview for the 4-year. All assessments involve careful application of linguistic knowledge, whether of classical languages or English, which I will ensure you are extremely well-prepared to do. Applicants are also required to submit two pieces of written work prior to interview, which I am able to advise about if requested.

I've taught Creative Writing to university students at a world-leading school, and worked with younger audiences, and I'm happy to work with a variety of forms in English. I studied for my MFA in Creative Writing at the University of British Columbia, and won a scholarship as the strongest poet in my cohort.
