Latin + Greek for Beginners - a great way to improve memory, understand ancient cultures, and assist modern language learning

Studying Latin and Greek can enhance your understanding of English vocabulary and grammar, as many English words have roots in these languages. By learning Latin and Greek, you can develop a deeper appreciation for the origins of words and their meanings. This knowledge can be useful in fields such as law, medicine, and science, where technical vocabulary has Latin and Greek roots.

Knowing these languages can also improve your critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Both Latin and Greek are highly structured, and mastering them requires attention to detail and logical thinking - it's the kind of brain training that puts your morning crossword or sudoku to shame! Furthermore, studying ancient texts can help you both to develop analytical and interpretive skills that can be applied in various academic and professional fields, and also gain a firm grasp on cultures which permeate modern life.

These ancient languages are also useful for those interested in pursuing a career in academia, law, medicine, or any field that values research and analysis, since many graduate programs require knowledge of Latin and Greek, and fluency in these languages can open up opportunities for research and scholarship in fields such as classics, history, and philosophy.

Finally, learning Latin and Greek can also provide personal enrichment and cultural understanding. These languages have been instrumental in shaping Western culture, from their mythology and philosophy, to theatre and art. Studying Latin and Greek can provide insight into the history, literature, and art of ancient civilizations, and the ways in which they reach into modern life.

In summary, learning Latin and Greek can offer a range of benefits, from improving your understanding of English to enhancing your critical thinking skills, opening up career opportunities, and providing cultural enrichment.

I can ensure a pleasant and upbeat working atmosphere, that will keep your mind as sharp as a tack!

About Me

Hello, I’m Calypso, a Latin and Greek tutor. After graduating from Oxford in 2019 I started teaching remedial Classical languages, and also some English language and literature. I have taught pupils who have gone on to study at top schools like Winchester College. I myself went to Charterhouse and have a comprehensive understanding of the pressurised atmosphere of independent schools.

My ethos when it comes to teaching is building confidence. I know how it feels to be a little lost or behind, and how it can knock your enthusiasm for a subject. I like to start with basic grammar, and usually the student and I work our way through the textbook, catching anything that might have been neglected by the teachers at school. The hectic atmosphere of the classroom sometimes lets foundational grammar and skills fall through the cracks. It’s my job to catch those little pieces and reassure my student that learning Latin and Greek need not be an unpleasant experience, but more like an easygoing cerebral workout which can enhance our general skills as linguists, but also reinforce our cognitive abilities. Additionally, Roman and Greek cultures offer up so many aspects of human life ripe for exploration.

My main priority is the enjoyment of the subject: learning is incredibly satisfying if done thoroughly. I hope I can be of service!

Education

Oxford University (2015-2019): BA in Literae Humaniores
Charterhouse School, Surrey (2012-2014): A* English Language and Literature, A* Latin, A Greek (using the PreU system, respectively D2, D2, D3)

Experience / Qualifications

I have been tutoring since 2019, and have a BA in Classics, as well as Latin, Greek and English PreU qualifications. I have helped pupils gain access to the top UK independent schools, as well as remedial work and beginner's lessons.

Non-academic Latin lessons. Multilingual teacher with 9 years of experience. Pronunciation, historical linguistics, conceptual semantics.
Contrary to popular belief, learning Latin is not like learning the phone book by heart. I offer you Latin lessons that are unlike any other. There are two types of courses. Here is an analogy to illustrate their respective approaches: If you take the train back and forth every day and don't have time to wait long at the platform, imagine that you only have two options: 1) Learn the schedules by heart. 2) Note that the train arrives every ten minutes and that a train arrives for example at 7:00 a.m. In school pedagogy, in study notebooks and in ordinary courses, it is the first approach which is adopted - in the courses that I offer you, it is the second because it is more economical and faster. My offer is aimed at both students and adults who want to learn the Latin language or deepen their knowledge without time-consuming detours through the insanities of school methods which do not produce results. Learning is easy but unlearning what has become a bad habit is extremely difficult. All the more important it is to learn the right reflexes as early as possible. With my tailor-made teaching you will accelerate your learning in a positive state of mind. I offer individual or group Latin lessons (2 to 5 people). The methods are based on cognitive sciences and in particular historical linguistics. What will not be the subject of the course: learn lists of verbs; learn lists of nouns with their gender; learn words with their translations; memory card game; doing school exercises; follow the program in a notebook; impose French grammar on the Latin language. What matters to me in particular: motivate my student and give him a learning rhythm; encourage creativity; make friends with language; letters and their sounds strengthen your memory by working on the phonological loop; teach construction plans instead of having people learn sentences by heart; explain how the language works to make my student independent as quickly as possible; breaking preconceived ideas such as the gammatical gender would have a link with the biological gender, the accusative would be a direct complement and the dative an indirect complement, the verbs would be irregular, the declension would be random and therefore to be learned with each verb... ; place practice at the center and articulate grammar around practice. In the context of a first course, you can get a well-founded idea of my pedagogy. I look forward to meeting you.

GCSE: Latin Language and Latin Literature Lessons.
I am familiar with many examining boards, such as AQA, OCR and Pearson Edexcel. My goal is to: - Provide personalised support to help the student overcome their academic challenges, instilling confidence in the topic. - Strengthen the student's understanding of exam board 'Assessment Objectives', equipping them to approach exams strategically. (Exams are like a game - knowing the rules makes success easier). - Enhance writing skills by reinforcing PEA structure (Point, Evidence, Explain) for clear and effective responses. - Offer practical advice on revision techniques, study tips, and tools to boost the student's performance. I achieved A* in Latin at GCSE in 2017, without dropping a mark I scored 100% across all four papers (400/400 UMS). I earned an A in Latin at A-level in 2019. I was offered a place to read Classics with English Literature at Edinburgh University in 2020. I studied Latin for two years at Edinburgh, before dropping it to complete my undergrad in only English Literature. I graduated with First-Class MA Honours in English Literature in July 2024.

Oxbridge Classics Admission Application and Test Coaching
Applications for Classics at Oxford and Cambridge both involve a language assessment, for which I provide expert tutoring and guidance in as a first-class Classics and English graduate from Oxford. Classics at Oxford uses the Classics Admissions Test (CAT) for Course I (for students with Latin/Greek to A Level) or the Classical Language Aptitude Test (CLAT) for Course II (for students without Latin/Greek) to decide who will be invited for interview. At Cambridge only candidates shortlisted for interview will be required to take such assessment, which will be a translation exercise for the 3-year course, or a language aptitude interview for the 4-year. All assessments involve careful application of linguistic knowledge, whether of classical languages or English, which I will ensure you are extremely well-prepared to do. Applicants are also required to submit two pieces of written work prior to interview, which I am able to advise about if requested.

Greek language classes for adults and children (all levels, personalised journey )
When learning a language, every person needs a different method. Some of us are better with grammar, others need a lot of listening or writing when learning. That's why my goal is to create a personalised class that suits the goals of each individual. Whether you are a beginner, an advanced learner, or a person with greek origins who needs to connect again with the language, I am here to help you enjoy the learning process. I have 3 years of experience both with children and adults. Let's start this journey together!

This lesson is for children with dual nationality living overseas. The language taught in English schools is difficult for Japanese people. Your child speaks Japanese and English, but is struggling with other languages at school. Knowing Japanese will help you better explain how to study a language of Latin origin. Understanding, regaining confidence, learning, and succeeding are the stages of my guidance. Homework, explanations, test preparation throughout the year, and during school holidays The best time to start is before the year-end exams. You can consult for free online in English or Japanese. Just make a reservation. Let's work hard together !

In this Latin course, I offer "Common Entrance at 13+" training (including scholarship papers) for those students who have studied Latin for one or two years, and would like to revise, do translations and read from fun books such as Minimus or So you really want to learn Latin. Plenty of cultural stories and mythology in the mix, besides battles and august men. A basic understanding of grammar (or willingness to learn) expected. Ideally, students ought to be doing Latin at school and preferably have a second language (a Romance language ideal for securing a higher grade).

Ian
Living Latin through Comprehensible Input (Contemporary and Medieval Latin)
You will learn Latin the way it was meant to be learned - through conversation! Medieval scholars and contemporary language researchers alike advocate the use of dialogues and comprehensible input for language acquisition, and it most certainly works! As opposed to the "memorise grammar rules and then babble them in front of the class" approach that was demonstrated by the infamous "Romanēs eunt domus" scene from Monty Python's "The Life of Brian", you will learn to feel the grammar, so that you will be able to use the different cases of Latin without even thinking about it, just like a native speaker! For this class we will be using the following books, depending on the learner's level: Hans Øreberg's "Lingua Latīna per sē Illustrāta" "Corderiī Colloquia" Erasmus Rask's "Colloquia Familiaria" John C. Traupman Conversational Latin for Oral Proficiency I will be the collocutor and I will answer the learner's questions and explain certain oddities solely in Latin (I will use a second language only when the situation calls for it) We will also engage in free-form conversations, discussions of the dialogues, of our life experiences etc so that the learner can apply what they learn to real-life situations and expand their vocabulary

Andrés
Ancient Greek, Latin and Spanish Language (online and face-to-face)
Hello! I am Andrés and I have a degree in Classical Philology. I teach Latin and ancient Greek classes, at all levels, both for school reinforcement and if you want to learn these two languages for pleasure. I like to teach these subjects based on new methodologies that make learning them more enjoyable and pleasant for the student. In addition, I like to complement the teaching of these languages with culture and history classes, since it is very important to know the context in which we move in each class. Anyway, I adapt to the needs of each student. I also teach Spanish Language and Literature reinforcement classes, both for Primary, ESO, Baccalaureate students, and those who take the University entrance exams. Flexible schedule.

Learn Greek with an Experienced Philologist
I am a passionate philologist with a degree from the University of Ioannina, specializing in Modern Greek Literature and Poetry. With over six years of teaching experience in Ancient Greek, Modern Greek, Homeric Epics, and Greek Poetry, and three years of experience teaching Greek as a foreign language, I offer lessons that are both engaging and effective. In my classes, we combine structured learning with real-life conversations, cultural immersion, and creative activities. I believe that the best way to learn Greek is through interactive storytelling, exposure to Greek music, and discussions about Greek literature and poetry, including works by famous poets like C.P. Cavafy. My approach ensures that students not only acquire language skills but also develop a deeper connection to Greek culture and history. Whether you're looking to learn Greek for travel, work, or simply out of passion, I tailor each lesson to your personal goals and learning style. I’ve also had the privilege of teaching Greek to refugees and migrants, adapting my methods to ensure inclusivity and accessibility for all learners. Join me in an immersive, fun, and effective language journey where you will speak confidently and connect with the beauty of the Greek language.
