My name is Jamie and I have been playing drum kit and percussion instruments for over 20 years. I'm well versed when it comes to techniques, rudiments, various styles of music, reading music, writing music, and teaching. At the age of 16, I was not only in three band classes in high school, but was a member of two community groups, Little London Winds and Pikes Peak Philharmonic. Additionally, I've played percussion in orchestra pits for community theater productions for seven years. In 2012, I continued to play with various community concert and orchestral groups, all while coaching my old high school's drumline. In 2015, I joined the military but that didn't stop me from teaching. From 2018-2019, I coached a local high school drumline in Washington State who won an award at regionals for the first time in the schools history. Still in the military, in 2023 I relocated to California City, CA with hopes to tech aspiring individuals. Drum Kit: I started playing drums when I was six years old and am well versed in all styles of music. You, your child, your teen, or whomever you're looking into classes for will learn to read music, techniques, rudiments, and fundamentals. First, we start with the basics and build from there. It may seem boring or lack luster at first, but trust me, once you get the hang of the basics, the fun really begins. These lessons will also help if your teen is in the high school Jazz Band. Percussion/Marching Band: Recently, I have learned that the middle school in town has cut their music program, leaving teens to not be able to get the proper experience and musical education before going to high school. I want to help with that in any way I can. By working with me, your child or teen will be able to work up to the experience needed to get them through high school level classes and extra curricular activities. Since these lessons are to get your kid up to speed, I will be recommending books that they should be practicing will. During the lessons, I will bring my own but for them to get the proper practice, I highly suggest having copies of the books at home and a practice pad. Both: Most students who want to learn drum kit, end up playing percussion in school. For students that want to learn both, they'll get both percussion and drum kit lessons at no extra charge. My job as a private teacher is to help you, your kid, whomever with what ever they need. I do not have a strict curriculum, but I do plan my lessons around the student, their skills, and goals in order to help them be the best they can be.

Trusted teacher: Literature: During literature courses, students will be analyzing and interpreting different forms of fictional literature. This will help them understand the fundamental aspects of literature as an art form. We will be reading poems, prose, short stories, novels, novellas, and plays to develop close reading skills. Like an AP Literature class, students will dissect the work and write their analyses. Writing: During writing courses, students will have the option to focus on essay writing, creative writing, and business writing. With essay writing, we will be practicing different and effective techniques to successfully abide by the rubric provided. (Ask that the student have a copy of the rubric during the lesson). With creative writing, we will be enhancing skills in vocabulary, sentence structure, literary techniques, and plots (involving characters, settings, themes, and messages) to build fictional poetry, prose, novels, and plays. With business writing, we will be building and adapting resumes as well as learning how to write professional emails. Language Arts: During Language Arts courses, students will learn how vocabulary, grammar, and composition create effective arguments. This course will mainly focus on writing arguments through rhetorical, cultural, and contextual lenses. Additionally, students will be able to practice public speaking to improve their overall argumentative skills. Like an AP Language and Composition class, students will read nonfiction to develop an argument that explains ideas, argues a point, or persuades readers. Conversational: During conversational English courses, non-native English speakers will be advancing their understanding of the language. Students will be learning practical and conversational skills that improve vocabulary, conventions, and grammar. Lessons will cover reading, writing, and speaking for everyday life. As a tutor, I wish to tailor each of my classes to my students' interests and educational needs. Each lesson will be different from the rest and custom for each student, depending on their levels of proficiency.

I'm Alex, a working musician with more than 20 years experience teaching students of all ages. Every student is different, so every lesson is different. When you study with me, you focus on what you want to do, not a one-size-fits-all lesson plan. Take lessons where it's convenient for you. If you're local, you can learn to play your instrument at my home studio in Milwaukie, Oregon. Or, for a relatively small added fee, you can take lessons in your own home within about 15 minutes of zip code 97267--approximately as far north as Southeast Portland, Oregon, and south to about West Linn. If you're further away—really anywhere in the world with an internet connection and a videoconferencing app—you can learn to play via Zoom, Facetime, or whatever other video conferencing app you prefer to use. Lessons are tailored to your needs, tastes and skill level. I teach virtually all styles of guitar and electric bass, beginner to pro. I also teach beginner to intermediate banjo. I've taught guitar—including songwriting, composition, and theory—at the Austin Live Music Academy (ALMA) founded by Jerry Jeff Walker. I've taught adults and children at music schools around Portland, and K-12 students in after-school and summer programs at such prestigious private schools as Catlin-Gabel and the German International School. Zachary
What I enjoy most about my lessons with Zachary is how personable he is. You will not find a more patient or kinder instructor. For me, I decided that I wanted to learn how to play the violin later in life. I have never played an instrument my entire life. Zachary did not make me feel like my new start was impossible and he does not patronize. These are things that I have encountered from teachers in the past. Zachary meets you where you are in your abilities and helps you realize your potential. He is always willing to go the extra mile to help you on your journey.
