Any level welcome in this class. Learning songs is the beginning of the adventure, learning to play music with freedom is the lifelong journey. Improvisation does not mean we forget about technique! So, learn some saxophone, some jazz skills, and music theory in a tried-and-tested way developed over my many years of teaching. I am as passionate about improvisation as the saxophone itself, the two go together beautifully. I am Julia, a professional saxophonist originally from Montreal, Canada. I live in the Netherlands for 4 years and have a Master's degree in Music. I compose, engineer and perform music. I also love to teach, I have experiences with ages 9 to 90. The main idea of my teaching philosophy is to get the sound in your head out into the air. "Guided Fearless Music-Making" is my motto!

We’ll cover everything from the basics (like fingerings and embouchure) to more advanced techniques, such as tone production, articulation, and phrasing. Flexible and Fun Approach: I believe that learning an instrument should be enjoyable! My teaching style is flexible, and I encourage students to explore different genres and pieces that inspire them, while also building a strong foundation. Practice & Progress: We’ll set achievable goals each week, and I’ll give you tips on how to practice efficiently. Progress happens over time, and I’ll be there to support and motivate you along the way. Music Theory and Sight-Reading: In addition to learning how to play, we’ll also cover music theory and sight-reading to help you better understand the music and become a more well-rounded musician. Whether you want to play for fun, prepare for performances, or work towards exams, I’m here to help you succeed!

I offer clarinet lessons to young or adult musicians who like to play the clarinet, regardless of whether you are a beginner or an advanced player. I work from a holistic principle in which I base myself on various methods for clarinet practice (for beginners this is for example Jan van Beekum, hearing reading and playing or Collis. For the advanced player this is for example Collis or Gambaro, Uhl or Cavallini). I teach, among other things, musicality, expression, musical phrases, breathing, tone formation, technical control and rhythm. I myself still take clarinet lessons at the conservatory of Zwolle and I strive to pass on the skills I acquired there to the student.

In the classes we will address the different elements that make up music in different styles, knowing the particular language of each one. To do this, we will work on the different tools that we have with each instrument at the level at which each one is. We all know music but many times they make us believe that no, that it is necessary to know how to read and write. That is the graphic part of the language that we will learn little by little, music is a compendium of many other things. Some that we already know and others to know. We will study the use of the keys and the positions of the clarinet, or the sax, the best way to position ourselves whether we play standing or sitting, the most efficient way to use the air, the diaphragm, the muscles. We will learn to form a good embouchure and we will develop a study method adapted to each one, according to their tastes, possibilities and interests. I work with boys and girls from different parts of the world as well as with adults and the elderly. In my experience I learned that, truly, the greatest limitation that we find ourselves is the very feeling of not being able, of believing that we cannot. The support of a dedicated teacher is essential to get out of those places where we accidentally enter and that sometimes limit us. We all feel that sometime. It is time for us to remedy it. I will provide my own materials in pdf, video and audio. There is no age limit.

We follow a working method where you will continuously and deeply develop your musicality, way of playing, expressiveness and technique. -------------------------------------------------- ---------------------- Raúl is a Spanish saxophonist who finished his DIDACTIC MASTER in 2018 at the École Supérieure des Arts in Mons. Previously, he also completed a MASTER OF INTERPRETATION at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels (2015-2017) in the class of Alain Crepin and Simon Diricq. He studied at the "Musikene" (Higher Conservatory of Music of the Basque Country) with Eric Devallon, Tomás Jérez, Antonio Felipe Belijar and Miguel Ángel Lorente. Passionate about multidisciplinary artistic creation, he thinks of the mixing of all the arts in the same show as an aesthetic goal. This type of research could be observed in his project for his final master's recital in Brussels where he created a project based on Maslow's theory of the hierarchy of human needs where he mixed live, recorded music, dance, light shows and effects under the name: “according to Maslow... ” In terms of his career as a concert artist, he has played in different ensembles (solo performances, duo, trio, quartet, orchestra...) and different countries such as Japan (Artisanal Musical Fair "Suono Italia" 2010), Belgium (Festival Musiq3 2016), Artonov Festival at BOZAR in 2016...), France (Dax chamber music festival 2011) or Spain (Music Festival “Quincena Musical” 2015, Aste Nagusia 2015, Heineken Jazzaldia 2014, Festival Kutxa 2015, Intercentros Melómano 2010).

My teaching experience has ranged from children or adults starting from zero with the instrument to students with a medium-professional level. I specialize in clarinet, although I also teach piano at beginners' level and theoretical subjects, from music theory to harmony, analysis and music history. My methodology is based on adapting to the student, following different teaching strategies appropriate to each level and age. From playful methodologies with younger children, to specific methods with older students. I believe that adapting to the situation is always more important than following a rigid methodology. We will follow your own goals, and if you don't have them clear, we will create them together! Looking forward to meeting you!

I will provide you with a personalized program to fit you, study material, and online support whenever needed. With my theory course, you are gonna acquire a better understanding of the music language as well as developing your ears. I like to have fun during my lessons and enjoy playing but always challenging and becoming better!

Are you a beginner?? No worries: no experience is required! 😁 I can teach you the basics to produce sounds with your saxophone: position of the embouchure (teeth, tongue, lips and vocal cords' position, an element often forgotten), fingerings, use of diafragma,... After the first two lessons spent on the mouthpiece and neck for the sound production, we will immediately start to play some super easy duos together to practice your capacity of listening, pay attention to the other, ear training as well. I normally use the book of Peter Wastall (titled Learn as you play) as support, but it is not mandatory. There are plenty of good books btw! Are you an intermediate / advanced student?? I am sure you can still improve in all the basics, but on a different level. I'll teach you the importance of the "voicing" (technique named by the american saxophonist and pedagogue Donald Sinta) to improve your sound production and projection as well as the capacity of correcting and improving the intonation. You can learn all about phrasing and music interpretation, from tonal music until contemporary atonal compositions. And still, you can improve your playing together, practicing in duo on different aspects like tuning, balance, interpretation, performance etc. Book a lesson and try! This class is for people who are passionate about the saxophone and are interested in learning how to play it or level up his/her current skills. Also this class will help you with improving your ear and melodical thinking. If you are a complete beginner and afraid of the fact that it won’t work - no stress, I give you a guarantee that you will play your first song after a 5th lesson! If you have some experience already and want to take a step further - I’m looking forward to guide you through the whole journey of new musical experiences. I’m having a personal approach to each of my students, so you can be sure the lessons are not going to be boring! I find it very inspiring when the student hears him/her making a difference every lesson.
