This course aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the modern Greek language and culture. Throughout the course, we will focus on developing listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills, using contemporary Greek culture as a reference. Various homework exercises will be assigned to assess students' progress, with particular emphasis on grammar, syntax, and spelling. The goal is to help students expand their vocabulary and effectively use it to construct grammatically accurate phrases and sentences. To accommodate diverse learning styles, we will explore different teaching methods, such as listening to songs, watching YouTube videos and listening to Spotify podcasts, reading excerpts from Greek texts, and utilizing online teaching tools like Mentimeter and Quizlet. The aim is to cater to the unique needs of each student and make the learning experience engaging and enjoyable. This course provides a comprehensive introduction to linguistics, covering key areas such as phonetics, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, and morphology. Related fields include sociolinguistics, argumentation, rhetoric, and methods of conducting research in applied linguistics. Students will explore the structure, sound, and meaning of language, gaining insight into how language interacts with cognition, cultural identity, and social dynamics. Through analysis and critical discussion, this course offers essential foundational knowledge for understanding language as a complex, multifaceted human phenomenon. Additionally, the students have the possibility of delving to the essentials of writing an essay in linguistics, by examining the different parts of a linguistic essay, the way of academic writing and matters of validity and ethics while conducting linguistic experiments. The course includes the following topics: 1. Introduction to Linguistics 2. The five levels of linguistic analysis (Morphology, Phonetics-Phonology, Syntax, Semantics, Pragmatics) 3. Related linguistic fields (such as Historical Linguistics, Sociolinguistics, Argumentation, Rhetoric, History of Linguistics, Psycholinguistics) 4. How to conduct research in applied linguistics (using methods like questionnaires, interviews, qualitative content analysis, grounded theory, etc.) 5. Applied linguistics: Teaching a language (Teaching a native language as a foreign one). 6. How to write a linguistics essay (Parts of an essay, argumentation-academic writing, validity, ethics).
